Skeletal System

Functions

Bones belong to the supportive structures of the body. They appear to be passive, but bones are organs that come in different shapes and fulfill many important functions.
  • Bones shape the body´s supportive frame.
  • Together with muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments the bones are responsible to move the body.
  • Bones protect the body, especially inner organs. The skull for example protects the brain.
  • Bones produce blood cells. This process is called "Haematopoiesis".
  • Bones serve as storage for minerals such as Calcium and Phosphorus.

Bone Anatomy

Bones are light and at the same time extremely rigid. They are mainly made of osseous tissues of calcium phosphate. A lot of what is generally recognized as bone is nothing but space, because their inner structure is formed honeycomb-like.
